Tesco – Remediation, Earthworks & Infrastructure

Client: Bowmer & Kirkland

Bowmer & KirklandThis project is still in progress and involves the remediation of a former industrial site. It will be completed within a challenging timeframe and on a spatially restricted area. Our contribution will centre on the completion of all works to bring this project out of the ground.

Scope of works:
The scheme involved a mass reduced level excavation and the disposal off-site of circa 45,000m3 plus arbitrary cut to fill including the removal of relic foundations. The cut to fill material was stabilised within the works as the construction platform to achieve the design CBR value of 30%, reducing the need for aggregate materials.

Co-operative Headquarters – Bulk Earthworks

Client: Bam Construction

EarthworksOur contribution to the most prestigious project in Manchester in 2010 was the mass excavation and disposal of some 50,000m3 of alluvial deposits which was completed in traffic sensitive and built up city centre location without disruption. We have further minimised environmental impact by re-engineering materials on-site use and for export of materials to other schemes.

Scope of works:
Bulk excavation and disposal, management of contaminated materials, provision of piling platform, management and eradication of invasive plant species and capping of legacy culverts.

NEC Engineering Works – Remediation

Client: Taylor Woodrow on behalf of TESCO

RemediationThe former site use was the NEC engineering works, the developable site area equated to 160 acres and was remediated in line with the environmental remediation strategy that had been developed in order to redevelop the site for its proposed end use being a TESCO distribution centre.

Historic demolition had been carried out by the vendor prior to the site acquisition by TESCO, demolition wastes were evident at the site and the ground investigation identified contamination and geo-technically unsuitable ground conditions for the foundations of the proposed distribution centre.

Scope of works:
The works involved large scale earthworks which consisted of removal of existing slabs, re-grading of the site to achieve the desired finished levels, this consisted of the relocation of 985,000m3 of made grounds of which 750,000m3 was geo-technically improved utilising lime stabilisation techniques, the remaining made grounds were geo-technically improved by re-engineering methods, all relic foundations and other impediments were removed and re-processed on site, overall 100,000m3 of sub-base compliant with the specification for highway works was generated from the re-processing on site and was utilised within the works as the construction platform to a required CBR value of 30%. Contamination on site was encapsulated and utilised within landscape areas, beneath the subsequent environmental cover system.

All the works were tested and inspected in line with the agreed remediation strategy and the site was satisfactorily signed off on completion by the local Environmental Heath Authority and the Environment Agency.
